Engine Weight

I was wondering what the approx. weight of 232 engine plus transmission would be? I'm waffling on engines again! I thought I was all set to go one way.

Too many good ideas have been floated my way.

    Thanks

Weight has never been a factor for me in picking and engine/trans combo - except looking at the Hudson Invader 168 (3000lbs with transmission!)

What are you looking for performance per CUI?

I'm now toying with the idea of running vortec v8 in my Pacemaker.

Just wondered about weight difference? Fuel injection and overdrive tranny is tempting.

Larry, I think we had this discussed previously and I don't think there was much difference if I remembered correctly. I'm going to run an all aluminum LT1 and 4L60e in my Pace Coupe. Like Dan said, I don't think weight is much of a factor. I wanted the EFI V8 for other reasons. But then, mine's not going to be stock by any means.

A small block (standard, cast heads, cast block) is around 575 lbs

What I can tell you with my big block install is that the motor will be moved back at least 6" from the stock forward location of the Hudson motor.

That will shift the weight nearer the firewall and not so forward on the suspension in theory the car should now handle better and not be as prone to oversteer.

Really - put the motor in there that's going to make you happy and drive the car.

I'd like to have a stock stepdown someday - but it will sit along side the custom!

Thanks for the replies. I'm having second thoughts about my plans for the Pacemaker.

Just met a neighbor of mine who has a '50 Merc sled. Its got a V10 Viper in it! They had to move the firewall back and the a/c stuff had to be resituated he said. The center console looks huge because the tranny is also back further. Looks cool when you open the hood though! And sounds mean.

That v10 would fit a Hudson without replacing the firewall!

Yes, but why would you want to? A Hudson engine is better looking and works better then a Dodge V10 any day!!

For those who like stock, you're probably correct. But hands down, if money was no object, I'd take the Viper any day over a flathead. That thing would scream down the highway!

In today's world money is an object. The V10 is losing proposition for the following reasons.

    1. It takes considerable money and time to install in car.

    2. The price of gas is high and going higher. The V10 gets about 1-2 MPG at speed. Nobody except Bill Gates would to afford run it at speed.

    3. Running at speed gets you speed tickets and their hefty fines and even higher insurance rates. If you keep it up you lose your license.

    4. Finality, if you must go fast a Viper is faster and safer then a Hudson with a V10.

It makes no sense to build a car for purpose it can not be used for.

Other than possibly the air bag ~ I'd much rather be strapped into my Hudson with a sisal rope wrapped around my waist than that plastic laden death-trap-hot-rod they call a Viper! (can you tell I don't like new cars:))

I mean which of us could even fit into a Viper anyway ;) HudsonKid's head would be sticking out the top - I don't think I could get in one without a shoehorn and greasing myself up!

How about a Viper V10 engine mated to a motorcycle?
    motorcycle-11.jpg

However not really a motorcycle in the the basic sense - it has 4 wheels - but whoever rides it sits on it, not in it...

    Those things are completely insane!

Have you seen anyone ride one? On video it looks like the "stunt rider" can barely hold on when he rolls onto the throttle!

I admire the unique engineering in the entire "bike" not jut the Viper motor.

So, did anyone ever answer his question?

I too am curious to see what a 232-262-308 weighs.

Last time I had a 308 and Hydramatic on the cherry picker I am thinking in the 600-800 Ib region would be a safe ballpark. Of course I did not lift the combo over my head...even though I could if I wanted to LOL....

 I love that bike! It's awesome. I saw a motorcycle in the Peterson that had a flat head V8 in it. I remember thinking it would be cool with a 308! The twin H air cleaners would be a little tall, maybe. lol

How about putting in a fresh rebuilt Hudson motor and leaving it original as possible?

Just had a 232 hanging from my engine puller today (taking out of the bed of Jim Guinn's truck) - I would estimate it at around 450-500 lbs, without flywheel, intake & exhaust manifolds, starter, etc.. It did have the water pump, fan, distributor, oil filter attached. Just a guestimate though...

well my son can pick up a 232 and move it over a foot or so easy enough---but then he can bench 500# and maxxed out the leg press machine at 1000#----i will have to ask him if he has numbers in the clean and snatch and see if we can get a guestament( as my old trig teacher used to say)----bob
