51 mercury truck..help
-
Hi, I just bought a 51 mercury 1/2 ton and found it has a ford flathead v8 in it .At least the heads have 8ba on them and the heads and block are bronze in color. I want to start this engine up but the fuel pump and the part that is between the pump and the intake manifold are missing. I need to know if the motor can run with the opening on the intake manifold capped and an electric pump installed. I am new to these motores so any and all input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help...Jim

My guess is that you can. I would think that all that there is there is a space for the pump to attach to the cam.
Have you tried calling someone like this
Dennis Carpenter, 1-800-476-9653, dennis-carpenter.com
C & G Ford parts, 1-760-740-2400, cgfordparts.com
Also if you want to get a pump for it try:
Antique Auto Celler in MA, 1-781-335-1579
Good luck and hope that this helps

right Ron,nothin there but a fuel pump, and being they were notories for vapor lock an electric pump helps some. You can get one at about any parts store. put it back close to the fuel tank Bud

My other cars are 49 Fords. I have a bunch of Flathead Ford engines.
Lots of guys just cap off this opening and install an electric fuel pump. Just use the top part of your fuelpump and take out the rod.
Make sure nothing has dropped in there that can get against the cam.
