1928 Essex Available for Free
-
Car (what's left of it) is located in Santa Paula, CA. Its been sitting longer than I have been alive, so most non metal parts aren't there anymore, nor is the rt front fender, running board, hood, grille and radiator. Motor is pretty well stripped, and has large crack in top of block. Seat springs are there, as is rear window shade and two cowl brackets for ?? 86 yr old owner wants to clear off his lot, so car must go, preferrably to one who appreciates an Essex. Chassis looks to be complete, and besides expected body rot at base of doors, the body is pretty straight, no bullet holes, etc. I have more photos for emailing and I'll help pull it out of the yard . You'll need a spare set of wheels & tires - most of the spokes are missing an inch or two of length. Dig this - the pink slip is available for this vehicle!

It would be nice to send this into the WTN, since there are probably more Hudsonites reading that than are viewing this forum. The deadline is today (Feb. 1) for the next issue, though.

Sounds like the kind of guy who if he loved horses would work in a pet meat shop. I wonder what he means by "appreciate an Essex". I tried to buy an Essex coupe 45 years ago, owner wouldn't sell because he used the car for his honeymoon when it was new. Next time I saw it he had cut it up to use the chassis for a trailer for carting gravel up from the river!
Seems kinda funny for people who love cars to leave them out to rot like this.

Regarding the '28 Essex, where is it located in California? how soon must it be removed? My younger son has been wanting an Essex tudor to build a street rod, though I do not know when he will get to it as he is very busy. Would we be able to pull this Essex up onto a car Trailer? I live near Carson City, Nevada, so depending on distance we would have to make time to get there and back. Please let me know, Thanks, A>M>

From the sounds of it, the person who posted is trying to be helpful and doesn't want to see this old relic go to the scrap yard - which would probably be quite a bit easier than trying to find someone who would take it... Granted, the condition indicates decades of neglect -
As far as the question of location - according to Mapquest, Santa Paula, CA is located just north of Oxnard & east of Santa Barbara.

If the chassis is in tact solid enough someone could make a period racecar out of it.

Geoff, I gave up asking about old iron years ago for the same reason. Some people just cannot seem to get it togther enough to either let it go or protect it from futher decay, but IT is their vehicle sio its their choice. -
Sorry, didn't mean to appear to be harsh, but just commenting that so many times I have seen people who have a sentimental attachment to a particular vehicle, yet leave it out in the weather to slowly rot away. I have tried to buy cars in the past, to be told, "that was Dad's cars, and it means a lot to me", and then they leave it to rot. That kind of logic escapes me I'm afraid. There is a rare 1927 Hudson Brougham with Biddle & Smart Body, not too far away, which has been parked in a farmer's lean-to for 40 years now, and he's "Gonna do it one day". The spokes are now rotted away from being covered in farm dirt, and the poultry have been roosting in the hood bows, with manure up to the seat level, but he loves that old car, and would never sell it! As I said, Horse lovers and pet meat!

My next favorite to this story is the guy who has a hulk rusting in his yard who says give me $500 for it or I will have it crushed at the junk yard. Can't figure that either..www.hudsonmotorcar.org

Geoff.

However, I would welcome anyone who could convince the stubborn, recluse owner to part with this truck... -
Yep, that's all sad. Great truck, Rick. I'm in the "I just don't get it" category, myself.
-
Thats a Washington plate- where is it, anyhow? I'm alleged to be highly persuasive, you know. . .

I'm pretty persuasive myself...
I really could use that truck for the restoration of mine - even if the drivetrain and frame are totally shot! (most likely...) -
