9" Ford oil plug

I was wondering when Ford last used the oil plug in it's 9" 3rd member. I know they didn't have it in 63. I located a new set of gears but the pot does not have the side oil plug in it. I believe my housing is a 57 and it doesn't have a plug. I could drill the housing for a new plug but I'm a little leary of placing it to high or to low. Any help and information would be appreciated.
