Sonny sent me some more pictures yesterday, so I thought I would make a separate 'post' for the build on his Hudson...

I plan to widen the rear fenders and pancake the hood 3" . but will need to get further along before doing those two things.I have had problems posting pics on here I think Rick "white triangle trucking "may have posted some early pics.

Great start on the 46. I hope you don't mind but I took some liberties and did some customizing in Photoshop as to how it would look with hand made fender skirts and white walls.
    Peace,

Sonny, I think you are going to have a great car and admire your work. I can not remember seeing another coupe like yours at any car shows, dare to be different, I am tired of all of the cookie cutters.

I also like the big shop and equiptment, real nice. Good luck with your build.

Here are a few pic's of my 46'. . . . . Well you can see what is still needed. I just need to make a quick trip out to Bill Albright's for some missing trim pieces, but as you can see by my title I am the "procrastinator". I will be getting it together here real soon so I can put it up for sale to finance the '32 Essex sedan build.

    Joe C,

Thanks for the pics, definately a sharp looking truck. I've always had a soft spot for all of the 46-47 models.

I located a 46 truck that I plan to buy and make into my daily driver. It has a SBC , which wouldn't have been my first choice, but since it's there...

Nice looking truck Joe! Looks like a lot of room in the engine bay with that small block. Very clean.

    Joe,

I like your truck. The shortened bed looks nice. I've never seen passenger car type wheel openings on the rear fenders of a truck... I kinda like that too.

Thanks Dany, The frame shortening was quick and straight forward, I put many hours into the bed. I removed the stake pockets (4 x 53 spot welds each = a lot of drilling) replaced the front panel with a new one after removing 6". The rear cross section also got replaced and 6" removed from the bed sides. When I reinstalled the stake pockets I never opened up the hole into the top of the pocket, kind of a cleaner look yet could be opened up at any time.

I picked up the new tail gate from Bill A and built my own hinges and bushed the tail gate pivot holes with a brass bushing (smooth & quiet). The rear fenders were in real bad shape and I chose not to deal with them. Bill A had a NOS set of sedan fenders hanging on the wall in his shop just waiting to fall off onto his perfect convertable, so I traded my nine year old son for them. I cut the factory stand off adapter from the truck fender and fit it to the sedan fender, not to difficult just a little time consuming to make it right.

It was a bit of a gamble on the apearance but I am happy how they turned out. Most non Hudson people don't have a clue any way. I bought this truck as a roller about 3 years ago on eBay, it was a french vanella color, and structrually in good shape, it came from Byron, Il. The truck weight is exactly 3200 lbs. and with about 300+ HP it runs real nice.

It came with a 308 which is waiting on a engine stand for a new life in my '32 Essex.

    Thanks again, Joe

Joe, I WISH you were closer... I'd really like to look at some of those details you are referring to with the bed & the tailgate, etc., etc., etc.
I don't plan on shortening the bed on my truck, but a lot of that work would be quite similiar to some of the work I am planning for one of my pickups...

Would LOVE to be able to walk through Bill's place - of course it probably is a good thing I am on the opposite coast, as my wife would probably divorce me for being away so much!

Got this from From Sonny -
"Well I finally had time to work on the Hudson. Filled all 42 holes in the fire wall. Cut 18 gage fillers for them welded, ground down and premiered it today. I will put the body back on the frame Sunday to fit all the sheet metal and locate body to frame bolts. I sold the 383 chevy motor now I have to figure out what I'm going to do for another one. Next weekend were going to Spokane WA to a rod show and see if I can find an LS 2 with a trans."

These are a few of my under dash brake power booster and A/C also elect windows and door lock system. every thing is temp as I don't have my elect wiper motor yet. I hope I don't have to move anything. I also have my mock up motor and trans in place. Will work on interior lights and air ride equipment this weekend.

Nice Sonny! Are you using the original accelerator pedal or aftermarket? Which a/c unit are you using? What unit is the master cylinder/booster?

    Coming along nicely dude!

    Pics are looking good Sonny!

Jay - I was going to use the original pedal, but - it's a little anemic and missing parts so I bought one of these to modify instead...

thanks for all the kind words about the HUdson and my shop. I had hoped it would be closer to finish, but good things sometimes take longer. And work took up a lot of my rod time.

Jay the master brake set up is from ECI you have to beg them to put an 8" booster on.The AC is Vintage Air compact. the column is Flaming River the missing wiper motor is New Port. I had wanted cable driven but couldent figre out how to drive the wiper towers with their chain drive. Should have asked on the forum. Thank you-all Sonny

Sonny, really like your car and progress. We put an ECI booster under the dash on my 48 coupe, with disc brakes on the rear, we could not get sufficent brakes until we put in a double booster. Just a caution.

Thanks for the tip will let you know how it works. I know that I m pushing the max on master cylinder may have to go up next bore diameter. that should give me preasure and volume to be safe. I have about an inch between AC and master. I will probably replace it when I do tear down.

From Sonny, don't think he would mind me posting them and his comments:
"I'm back to work on the Hudson.I chopped the hood 1-1/2" to give it a forward slope the roof is cut 2" and will widen the rear fenders 1-1/4" along with opening the wheel opening 1-1/2" wider and lifted the same. That will make getting the tire's on and off much easier and I can put on a little larger wheel width and taller. Next before I get the motor installed I need to figure out how I'm going to latch the hood. front and rear roll pans and grill these will all be hand formed. So it will be a long winter project.
I split the front of the hood to pull it in for a more rounded nose. got hte hood supports cut and welded in last weekend. The last few weeks have been spent remodeling the shop for Yvonne's office, made it twice as big. Moved all my cabinets to the same side as her area. Some how the shop looks bigger and is more usable. More pics later."

Sonny, first let me say that I think this is going to be one more head turner! I have two projects going simultaneously because I enjoy punishment. I have two 1942 Hudsons both destined to be street rods though different styles. The first is a Commodore Eight coupe which though I love your modifications, I plan as a resto-rod, mostly updating suspension and drive-line. I am see-sawing on my choices for engines. Chevrolet 348 or the original straight eight updated with multiple carb intake and custom headers (as well as alot of other dress-up pieces). I've had confirmation that this engine can be adapted to a 700R4 transmission.

My second project started as a parts car but is now in the shop as well undergoing transformation. It was a 42 Commodore Six 4 door sedan but is well on it's way of becoming a sedan convertible complete with roll-up side windows, retractable top, chopped windshield, maybe more. I have been contemplating pancaking the hood as you did and your pics have convinced me. I've also thought about radiusing the wheel opening in the rear fenders much like I see the lines drawn in your last pictures.

But, the question I wanted to ask is about the Fatman's front clip. I just helped my uncle install one under a '41 Pontiac convertible. I was very pleased at how easy it went together and how well the front fenders and hood lined up when reassembled. I'm hoping you had the same experience on your Hudson?

I must say, I love this forum. I have never seen so many builders in one spot. Also the talant is fantasic. Sonny, do you have any close up pics of the master cyl. hook up. I have never seen one hooked up sideways, I cant picture what is making it work, other than a slave cyl. That truck is killer also. cleanest build I think I have ever seen. I love these Hudson's, but I too am a hot rodder (too poor to be a street rodder lol). Build on guys, great luck to you all. :)

The Fatman went in with little problem. It was a little of in width split my frame and added some fish plates. The spendels lined up with the center of the wheel wells as you can see in some of the later pics. Rick will get some updated pics in the near future. Sonny

    Update from Sonny -

I seem to be making some headway again.Had to put a base primer down to see where I was. One night this week I will put on some high build primer, As you can see I have my motor mounts tacked in and the red thing is the trans mount 700R.. Had a lot of time in on the recessed gauge and jockey box.Soon the 350Ram Jet will need to go in with the billet pulleys to locate the radiator mount and build it.

I got some more work completed this weekend.Put on a medium coat of high build primer over the black base. Started the March pulley system with out any instructions seems to have gone into the wrong box. Used the tech. com. at march for all the good that did. Not so good. I'm sure glad the motor is out. This is just a mock up using the real parts temped in,I will set it in with trans real soon.

    From Sonny:

Well I finally have the radiator in had to cut some of the mounting fins to get it between the frame. I tilted it back to clear the hood. Trans cover built and shifter installed. The wire loom from "B" pillar and door was fun I had put 1/4" plate at jambs of door and pillar for strength drilling them was a chalange.Seats bolted down they came from a King Ranch F 150 spent two days on fabing the mounts. Tail lights set still more work on the light can's but real close. It looks like I still have much to do. Sonny

    More work from Sonny -
"I have been working on the Hudson's dash. I have extended it 2" in the center and 3" on each end for my AC vents. Built a mock up of the console and cut patterns for the door panel's. Cut down all the window trim to match the new roof line profile. Moved the seat 3/8" to fit me better, that changed the steering column location so now I have to re cut my new drooped dash.. Started to install heat shield and sound attenuation under the dash while I had the column and master brake assembly out."
