Overdrive relay
-
Anybody have a part no. (preferably NAPA) for the overdrive relay for a stepdown, if such a thing is still available? Thanks- Mike

Uncle Josh: Would this one work? It is supposed to be for a Packard - "This is an exact replacement for the Borg-Warner HD fused overdrive relay. This relay will work with both 6-volt and 12-volt applications and uses the same wiring connections as the original."

** Talked to a technician at FifthAvenueGarage, who indicates that Borg-Warner supplied essentially the same transmissions and OD relays to 15 or so various automobile manufacturers, Hudson included.
Also, the OD Relay at Fifth Avenue sells is new, and requires no 'core deposit'.
For those with the time, patience & skills, here is an instruction sheet on re-building an overdrive relay. These instructions are for a Studebaker, but shouldn't be too much different from a Hudson Relay -

Mike,
Fifth Ave. Auto parts Ph. 785-632-3450 have the overdrive relay for $68, also kick down switch for $38, and last but not least the Borg Warner Overdrive Guide book, $15. I have one of their gear driven fuel pumps and love it.

You'll find the kickdown switch @ NAPA, for $18.00 - less than half of the cost (NAPA part #OD6284).Mike,

does anyone no of resistor value and wattage to use existing relay on 12 volt for the overdrive relay

For the '50 and later cars, Fifth Ave's headlight relay will do the job for quite a bit less money, unless you want something that looks similar to the original. As for a resistor for the solenoid, that's a tough one unless you have a '49 and earlier solenoid. Problem is the later solenoid has the high-current "pull-in" coil and the lower-current "hold-in" coil connected to the same terminal. A set of contacts in the solenoid disconnects the pull-in coil once it's done its job. So if you size a resistor to drop 6v when the pull-in coil is active, it'll have hardly any effect on the hold-in coil, so the latter will still be receiving most of the 12v. If you size the resistor to drop 6v when only the hold-in coil is operating, then when the pull-in coil is trying to do its job, the resistor will drop way too much voltage, and the pull-in won't (pull in!). I've worked this problem by using the '48-'49 solenoid, which has separate connections for the pull-in and hold-in coils. One can also search around for a solenoid from on a 12v OD equipped car. I've got a Studebaker 12v solenoid on my Hornet.

Try Bill Albright,or Al Saffrahn. They both probally have what you need.

i have a 12 volt solenoid from a ford that works fine but need to address the relay which is 6 volt or find a suitable 12 volt one or a suitable replacement but trying to look original..
