Trannie Swap
-
Got a 54 Dodge, 3 on the tree. I'm toying with the idea of fitting a small block Chev & auto trannie. (for modern day drivability...) But before i go 'pulling wrenches', Is there any automatics that will bolt up to the Flat-head 6 that's already there? Or has anyone done a motor/trannie swap like this?, or is this considered the ultimate sin!!!!!?
-
This may be a dumb question, but why does everyone want to put a Chevy engine in their car? Why wouldn't you want to keep the same manufacturer? Chrysler made some exceptional engine and transmission combinations so why wouldn't you want to kleep your car all Chrysler?????
Just a question is all

for information on how I installed a Borg Warner T-5 (five speed manual overdrive transmission) into my Desoto flathead six powered 1948 Plymouth. By virtue of the fact that I went with the long block Desoto engine my installation was somewhat more complicated than simply installing a T-5 behind a short block. Pictured is the final on the bench mock up of my install. I now am driving this car daily. Last week I drove it on a 1200 mile trip. At 70 MPH my engine is turning 2000 RPM's. I have also installed a Dodge charger 3.55/1 differential. The Mopar flathead six cylinder engine has ample horse power to pull your car at highway speeds.

Nicely done Don

Don, fantastic job! Definately an option for me. thanx for your input. As a mater of fact I'm starting to like that idea even though I'm not too keen on standards. Oldcar... I'm not everyone.
Perhaps I should 'Re-Word' my 'Idea' of changing the motor & / or trannie before I upset too many people. I'll leave out the 'Fords & the Chevys & whatever this time.
What Automatic Trannie will bolt up to the Flathead 6, And what about that X-member which sits so close to the motor. -
Sorry, I wasn't condemming you for it, it was just a question as to why so many people do that is all. Everyone has their own choice of how they want to upgrade their vehicle and I could never understand why so many pick swapping in a chevy motor instead of keeping it the same marque. I just get so tired od seeing chevy motors in everything. I understand it's a popular engine and reliable, but so mundane.
I didn't mean to offend and sorry if I did
