55 Old Grill in 50 Hudson
-
Jay, Now that tax season is over any ideas on how to modify the 55 Olds grill to fit your Hudson?
Roger -
Roger, not sure yet, haven't had much time (still recouping!) I went ahead and purchased the front fenders from Al Safrahn off the car which is my donor frame and cab. I need to get down there (he's about 45 minutes from me) and pick up the car and pieces....just have to wait a couple weeks as we have friends coming to visit us from France. I think I need a more round look on the grill opening ends to make it look nice. Just not sure exactly how to get that, maybe cut some pieces off an Olds or early 50's chevy and weld them into the Hud grill opening. A 52 Chevy has a nice "grill mouth" opening I think. I really need to get the donor frame here so I can start to fit pieces. And I'll have to look at width to see how it fits in the opening. But I really like the look of those grills, so I'm going to try to make it work. May have to make the front fenders and grill opening a "welded one piece." Like the smoothness of that idea.....no fender lines.
I found a place here in Tempe, AZ that can chemical dip the body and frame.....says his tank is 24' long! And the chemical they use (now can't remember the name of it) gets even the rust off without having to use anything as it doesn't etch the metal. His price around $1,400 for the frame and cab......anyone know if that sounds too high?
Did you modify your 50 grill yet? Love to see some pics when you do.

This is an interesting grill treatment on Tom Fink's '49 outa Florida...

Not bad Sam, I like the big and simple look. That is definately an idea.

Good luck with the grille of your dreams, Jay...

Hi Jay - too bad your grille pieces won't work in my 49 I have a couple dinged pieces I will need to repair or replace. Of course I still don't understand the changing of grilles when the Hudson is already sweet - but to each his own.jsrail wrote:Roger, not sure yet, haven't had much time (still recouping!) On the chemical dip - "gets even the rust off without having to use anything as it doesn't etch the metal" - uhmmm...what doesn't etch the metal? They're not trying to tell you that you don't have to etch prime it after its dipped are they - because that would be dead wrong.
Does that price include you not having to remove the grease, seal, and undercoating first (most places charge extra for this) - that would also make a bit of difference.
Dipping is a much better way to go to get rid of the rust - but will require additional prepping and materials to get inside of the frame rails, and replacing of all of the factory seam sealer - otherwise why go to the expense and time? Plastic Media blasting even @85.00 an hour would probably only run 600-1000.00 -
Dan, thanks for the info on the dipping, I'll need to get more info once the donor frame/cab is here. The reason for the grill change is frankly, that I think the '50 grill kind of looks like the gable vents on a house which vent the attic space. Its just a personal preference thing. That grill above which SamJ posted a pic of looks great. And I some folks won't like this, but, the DeSoto grills look great! I'm just trying to do something a little different, don't see many Old's grills on other cars.
I'll let you know what the dip guy has to say when I talk to him next, you've given me some good questions to ask. I need to find out if they do media blasting as well, I call him after hours and didn't have much time to talk. Fortunately, there is only minor surface rust on this donor since its been an Arizona car.

Options galore...
