Door Adjustment
-
Hi Guy's;
Well, lets try this again. For some reason my last post didn't make it through. I'm looking for some advise on adjusting the drivers door on my 39 Convertible. I've installed new hinge pins and that helped some, but I'm still not satisfied with the way the door and latch come together. Is it a matter of body shims, or am I looking for a problem with the hinges? Any help much appreciated.
Thanks, Gene. -
I'm just guessing here, but have you eyeballed the shim situation where the body meets the frame? It seems that if the shims were at fault, it would be a situation that would be fairly easily discovered by getting under the car and measuring the gap between body and frame, at different points.

Hi Jon;
I have looked and I don't see any shims between the body and frame. I'm quessing that I may need to add some shims in the door area. I've never had to add shims before, so I thought I would ask the experts first before I started jacking the body off the frame. Thanks for your reply, Gene. -
Well, you should continue to ask the experts before you start doing anything as radical as that! I ain't no expert, LOL!

What's the problem? does the door not line up with the striker plate or what?

Geoff, Yes, the door seems to be about a quarter of an inch or less low at the at the striker plate. The door opens and closeses OK, but you can tell by looking at the striker plate and the body reveal that things are not lining up the way they should.

Okay, you need to re-align the door. You've probably quite a gap at the bottom front where it meets the body. You need to bend the bottom hinge forward and the top hinge back to get it aligned properly. Try wedging a block in the bottom hinge and springing the door against it. Sounds brutal I know, but that's the way they did it in the factory. There is quite a comprehensive section on door alignment in the workshop manual, Section 21, page 7.
