I am fairly new getting into hot rods and rat rods. A newbie question I have is what would the exact terminology be for a car that is customized with flat black paint, big whitewall tires and red rims? The exact car I am looking at is a 51 merc. Excuse my ignorance please.

i think originally that kind of car was called "california satin" or was it "suede"?----hey you can paint out a similar unit with satin equipment paint---your local auto paint supplier should be able to mix it---a friend of mine painted out a 56 chev pickup with satin black enamel from the john deere dealer
and it is a great looking unit---bob

    Divine,

We call them Ol' Skool traditional rides or traditional California suede here in California. The term rat rod was pinned by a magazine type and it isn't like very much by the traditional group, yet it won't go away. Whatever you call your ride it looks cool.
