I have just recently inherited a 1951 Dodge4 door sedan. And I am goig to restore it to original shape. It has been parked for approx.20 years. Body is in real good Shape, front grille has a dent in the lower right hand side which i think is easly repairable. But i think i am going to replace the starter and generator to start with, possible rebuild the carb. it was running when it was parked, but hasnt been started since.should replace brake cylinder seals of course.

my question is what else should i do before i start it? i am not a Dodge guy and dont have much experience with them, any help will be muchly appreciated..:) also i am lookin for parts for 6 volt system..same vehicle.

A car that's sat that long will need the fuel system gone through, i.e. fuel tank, pump, hoses and carb. It will need the brake system gone through, i.e. master cylinder, wheel cylinders and any rubber hoses. Cooling system checked out and pressure tested. All hoses and belts. It's probably a flathead 6 so there is always the chance that sitting that long you may end up with a valve stuck. Check all wiring as sometimes rodents love to chew on them. Soaking the engine inside the spark plug holes for a while and turning the engine over before you actually start the car would be good.

Do things methodically and carefully and you should be just fine.

You also may want to join a club, that way you will have access to others that may have parts and information that you will need. A good manual for your car is highly recommended so you will have some idea how things work and specifics to your car.

Best of luck with your fun project and keep us posted.

Here's one: http://www.chryslerclub.org/ . Many Dodge components were shared by other Chrysler Corp. cars, so the tech. info. and parts advertised, will 'overlap' the different makes in that club.

You may also want to think about joining the AACA. There is probably a chapter in your area. They are filled with people that have all types of cars but a wealth of information can be had by many of these guys.

Your car is a fun family car that many people will like to see at shows (atleast they are around here) . It's a real "Hey, my dad had one" type car.

The electrics should not be a problem. I have a place near me that does Alternators and Starters but is more then happy to tackle the 6-Volt anytime I bring one in. Most places you will find that deal with old cars will have what you may need repaired.

Best of luck with the project
