flathead starter lock up
-
I am having a periodic problem with a flathead starter (converted 12v system) locking up in the flywheel (51 Merc. Block). Any similar experiences and/or solutions?
-
Those starters use a spin in type drive. In a no start situation the drive can stay in the engage position. The next time the engine is started it should disengage the drive.
-
If you need to get it unstuck, put the car in high gear and nudge or rock the car backwards.

The subject is also discussed a lot at fordbarn.com and the general problem seems to be a missing starter bracket that attaches the starter to a oil pan bolt. The bracket is usually missing on today's flatheads.
