1950 engine timming

1950 Hudson 8 cyl - What is udc ? Flywheel has one long line and four short lines. Where do i set the timming.Manual refers to udc 1-8" mark

UDC is for "Upper Dead Center," what most folks call "TDC." It's the long mark. For modern 87 octane gas, you can set it 2-3 marks in advance of the UDC mark (the timing recommendations were based on 80 octane).
