Looks like a 36 grille to me, but weren't the doors on the 36 'suicide'/front opening?
Out of Roanoke, VA, Starting @ $10k, with an unknown 'Reserve'. Not too thrilled with dash, steering wheel. Owner says it is not a 'show car', paint has some cracks, and that there is some rust (?), etc.. No pictures of engine compartment or trunk either (?).

It's a '36 grille, but the '37 has the forward-opening doors, '36 has the suicide doors. From the dash layout, I'm going to say he started out with a '37. Could be a combo thing, who knows?

Seller can't spell "Terraplane" at all, either!

Actually, he made pretty good use of the stock '37 dash. The left and right dash doors are stock, and the four outside square holes are as stock; these hold warning lights and gauges stock. The stock speedo hole in the middle was made smaller and a smaller middle hole above it was also created. For digital instrumentation utilizing an essentially stock '37 dash layout, I personally like it.

It'd make a nice driver, once you pull that SBC out and put something with a little more original thought in it, but hey, that's just me!!!

Yep, figured as much... (doors, grille, dash).

In my opinion, he'd have been pretty foolish to "rod" a 1936 Coupe - those are a bit more rare & sought after (in my opinion, mainly due to the 'suicide' doors), and a passable restored '36 coupe could be worth at least twice what they 'estimated' this one for as a 'rod'...
From the seller comments about 'cracking' paint and rust (no pictures shown of any of this), they didn't do too good a job on this build, either with rust removal or prep.

No bids yet... Think it will get any 'hits'? What do you think it will 'end' at?
My guess would be that it won't see $15K, if that.

For a 'driver' the SBC isn't a bad choice, just 'generic'/'vanilla' = nothing to 'write home about'. Something from Mopar would be a bit different - possibly a modern hemi w/5-speed automatic, or if it has to be Chevy, how about an LS1 coupled to a 6-speed trans..
For a weekend 'ride', a built-up old mopar (318) might be nice to see.

Any thoughts/recommendations for an alternative powertrain?

I'm with you on the eng/trans combos. Apparently, the builder was in a rush to put it on the road for the sake of getting it out the door, in my opinion. I think just because it's a coupe, someone out there might go $20K, but that's tops.
