splash guard install

    I've had the front inner fender pans powder coated on my 54 and have a new set of the cloth curtains {splash guards) to attach before I install them back on the Hornet. The orignals were stapled to the sheet metal and obviously I can't duplicate that. Anyone done this successfully? I was thinking about contact cement to hold them in place and then using stainless safety wire through the existing staple holes to simulate staples.

    Placing heavy wire in same holes and twist it . With a little cement underneath to help secure,
    sounds good to me ,

    That's EXACTLY how I did it. Stainless welding wire works quite well.

    If stainless won't work for you, use copper wire. It bends quite easily, won't rust, and is available locally. I've used it for a long time. Works great.

    I used pop rivets,for rubber guards and the curtain? Also spray glued all contact points with glue first. Using the staple holes as a guide.

    RL, thanks for adding that photo. I forgot I had to attach the rubber seals to the rear of the fenderwell also. Do you have any pictures of the large rubber flap install that folds under the frame in that same area? I appreciate everyones comments also.

    Also, forgot to mention that these rubber pieces were also glued before they were "stapled". I used contact cement. Only thing is, you have to rough up the smooth rubber before applying.

    Yes, they go on the rear of the inner fender between the inner fender and the cowl.

    The splash aprons on the '51 I did were rusted bad, and had old tar based undercoating on them. I had to fabricate and weld some replacement steel on them. I intend to use #M contact cement to hold the rubber strips on, and then put some SS wire thru the staple holes and hammer the ends over. Where did you get the rubber strips, or did you cut your own? I think the ones on my 53 came from Full Line, perhaps Doug W plans to supply those again?

    Looking at the picture Chris supplied, those strips came in the bag with part number 255. This is a K-Gap part number.

    Yes, it is a K-Gap part #. But, seeing as how I didn't have a K-Gap catalog handy at the moment, and didn't feel like going to find it . . . and I KNEW what those strips were, I simply stated what was obvious to me.

    So, for the record and if there are others who want to know, the K-Gap catalog says this about Part #255:

    "Front Fender Upper Inner Seal . . . . . . . . seals between inner fender and firewall"

    Which is just about exactly what I said earlier.

    By the way, if anyone needs it, I have a picture of these strips attached to a loose fender, as well.

    RL, I would like to see the picture of the seals attached. The other pictures look great and are better than an install manual.

    Russsell, where did you get the tan canvas dust seals for the bottom of the inner fenders? I need a pair for the '51 commodore I am doing. I hope you didn't mar the pool table with the inner fender......tut tut...LOL

    The picture is misleading. They are actually an Army "olive drab" color. They are NOS units and were a gift from Ken Cates. I'll get a better picture and post it. I still need to add the "staples" to the canvas.

    I understand that there were some folks in the club in the past that have made reproductions, but I do not know of anyone currently that has any for sale. Maybe someone will chime in here on the board.

    My wife makes them in black and a cream colored white. $30 plus postage. The lighted colored ones are made from a marine canvas. The black ones are canvas but not marine. Let me know if you are interested. She has sold quite a few sets to members in the club.
