1953 Hornet Checked Upholstery.

Does anyone need a close match to the 1953 Hornet Upholstery? I am in contact with a mill to produce this fabric in all green and blue......Currently the squares are two shades with beige background fabric, but with different colored yarn, they can make it all one color like the original. This is NOT the Duralee fabric. It is a new currently produced fabric. I am awaiting the reply from the mill on minimum qty, I was told be the Dallas area rep that it will probably be 100 yard minimum for the custom colorway, the weave program for the CNC loom is already set up, its just the yarn colors they have to change.

The green seems to be the most commonly used color. I will probably get the first batch in green, if all goes well with the mill. Won't know till next week.

OK, I heard back from the mill. The want a minimum order of 550 yards to run an all one green color version of this fabric. I can't recall off the top of my head how many yards were needed to do a sedan. I think it was 10 linear yards (roll is 54" across or 1.5 yards) Obviously that is probably more material than there will be Hudsons needing it.....The plus side is they are offering it at a low price per yard.......volume discount, but we may have to bring the price up to a still reasonable cost per yard, to cover the purchase cost. This batch would be in the green. We need to get word out and find out how much interest there is in getting this green batch of checkered fabric made. Maybe we can set up the purchase fund with deposits? We need to brainstorm, if we want this original looking fabric for our existing '53 hornets and '54 Wasps.

Here is a picture showing the new fabric in two tone green ( the mill can make it all in one darker hunter green, but with a 550 yard minimum order) side by side with the original '53 Hornet upholstery (in badly faded blue).

If I'm not mistaken that leftover material from the stepdowns was used by AMC off and on for several years on several models. If that is true it would broaden the market for the repo item, I dont currently have a 53 Hornet project in the wings but would probably buy some just for stock in my warehouse,

I think that material was used in '55-57 AMC's too. But there are few of those still
around, they rusted so badly compared to Stepdowns, as well as having rather weak suspension and steering components campared to the Stepdowns.

In the big scheme of things, how much is the price on the 550 yards? Granted it would go up as it would ship to one place and someone would be tasked with dispersing it out.

How much is the two tone they currently have? Might could settle for that. Partial trouble being it's only one of two fabrics used on the seats. And do they currently have a blue one? My car would be blue, but suppose since it needs a complete restoration, it could potentially get redone with a green interior (if it ever gets done as it's not the first project in the line).

Price per yard given to me was for the fabric delivered to the DFW offices. No shipping added. The bigger issue is the minimum quantity. There are three blue colorways available, and all are two toned. Perhaps one of the three can be vat dyed to the darker Navy color, as could the green I showed.

    Ken-

Don't know if you are doing a head count, or not, but you can put me down for 1 set (1 car's worth), whatever color you go with. I'll consign it to my brother for his shop.

Hello Russell, yes, it would be helpful to gauge interest before committing to a run of 550 yards. maybe we should discuss this with Dennis and Doug W?

I was playing around with seeing how these two toned fabrics would look if I used the currently available versions, and dyed them bluer and greener respectively. Here's what they look like on the computer.....not sure if dyeing them will give the same results.....but would get us around the 550 yard minimum for custom color weaving at the mill.....Just thinking out loud.
