Question for the Aussies

I'm dealing with a person in Australia, and the present task seems fairly straightforward to me- she needs to get a cashiers check in US funds, and send it to me in USA as a retainer for some legal work. She seems to be having a very difficult time of it. Is it really that difficult?

She started out wanting my banking information so her bank could wire transfer it. I was born during the day, but not yesterday- no dice. She still "is working the problem", and I wouldn't be surprised if she gets back around to getting my banking info again. But we shall see.

I have sent $$$ via wire transfer overseas about 6 times in the last year with no issues on either the sending or receiving end. The only issue is the fee both parties have to pay for the transfer. I would be leery of a cashiers check from someone I don't know personally.

I have a savings account that has only the required minimum $$$ to prevent paying any monthly fees. I only use that account for sending W/T's. If I were to receive one, I would only use that account.

Same thing here, I have one checking account with minimum balance to avoid fees, and use that for receiving payments by wire or from PayPal. Soon as I have a payment, I withdraw or transfer it to a different account. I used US Forex to send funds in Euros or Czech Korun to personal accounts with no problems. I did have to wire money to US Forex in NY, and the fee from my bank for the wire transfer was $20! The fee for US Forex to transfer the funds is only $5, plus there is the exchange rate to consider.

In Europe, and much of the rest of the world, there is the IBAN account transfer, that protects the holder's account info better. However, the US government in it's ever increasing overreach and intrusion into our privacy, requires the full account info of the foreign receiver's or sender's account, supposedly to detect "money laundering", Tax Evasion", or "Terrorist Activity". This can explain why some foreign persons may need the full account info to make the transfer to a US account. It is complicated and frustrating. Since 9-11, and our government's ever increasing hunger for our tax dollars, this overreaching intrusion into our lives has reached intolerable levels. In essence we are sacrificing our liberties for so called "security". When and where does it stop?

With PayPal, there is a limit to how much one can send and receive in a one time payment. for smaller amounts under $1000, it may work, but be aware the fee amounts to about 3.5% plus the exchange rate....... Any transaction $10,000 or above is automatically reported to the US gov't. A series of smaller transactions over a few days totalling $10,000 or more will send up "red flags" , as it will raise suspicion that one is trying to skirt the $10,000 reportable amount......
