Scotch makes a really good cloth tape, very similar to what's pictured, available generally at Home Depot or Lowe's... I'm guessing that's where the eBay guy gets his, and hopes to catch a few newbies unawares.

Thats friction tape, like I used to wrap my hockey stick blades for better puck control. You can get it at Lowes, Home Depot, True Value, etc for about $3.......

Used friction tape for years, on baseball bats when I was a kid. However, I would advise that after you wrap the areas that you wish to tape with a small "acid brush " paint the tape with a polyurethane coating to keep out water or moisture. When I rewired the engine area of my Cadillac 20 years ago, I did that and it looks brand new. Cloth tape will fray and separate a little. The urethane will prevent that. Even better tape is self vulcanizing tape(Rescue Tape), but of course it appears as vinyl, if originality is not essential.

I used high quality water and oil-resistant plastic tape to bind all the wires when I restored my Jet. This looks similar to cheap stuff you buy in hardware stores, but is much better quality, hence a little more expensive, and does not melt or go sticky and slimy like the cheap stuff. Can be bought at electrical supply warehouses here in N.Z. It is not so "shiny" as the cheap stuff, and does not unwind.
If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging.

The original, authentic tape for automotive harnesses is called "Elliott Tape" and is available very inexpensively on ebay also:
