What happened here?
-
I just pulled a 4:11 punkin for my friend's 39 from a 34 rear end that had been converted to use as a trailer. One axle pulled normally, but the other one dropped this 1/16 thick 'c' spacer out. Then the bearing wouldn't come out because the outer race was split and hanging up on the backer plate. I had to grind off the rivets and remove the plate to get it out.
The bore measures about .018 over the nominal 2.750, which the other side measures.
Who has a theory?

The original bearing had seized and spun the outer race in the bore, most likely. Then someone decided that the axle would be Ok to use as a trailer, they just popped in a new outer race and bearing in with that spacer to get reasonable end play. However, since the outer race was loose in the bore, it eventually fractured from the constant hammering. That's my take on it.
