Turn Signal Units

    did Hudson offer a Turn Signal unit that did NOT use the brake light? I would prefer to use a second/separate blub. I actually have the bulb holders installed in the tail light housings.

    If not, is there a wiring diagram that allows the by-pass of the brake light?

    Hi PM500

    My Pacemaker has an indicator switch unit on the steering column and the spare bulb units in the tail light are used for the indicator bulb. The front park lights are also used with its own circuit. I am happy to take photos if you would like.

    That would be nice. Thank you. My old unit was totally "rotten" inside but still used the brake-light.

    Stepdown senior series cars had a separate bulb for the turn signals. No involvement of the brake switch. Look at the diagram for Commodore or Hornet.

    Yes, the turn signal switches on the 1948-51 Stepdowns only had three wires, and was not tied to the brake light circuit, as it used a separate bulb for the turn signal. The 1952-53 turn signal switch had 6 wires and the circuit in the switch was setup to disconnect the stop light feed to the side that the turn signal was flashing on, and one a single dual filament bulb at he rear tailights. Some one put a 1951 turn signal switch on my 1953 Hornet but it was never connected when I got the car........I had to engineer a relay set to disconnect the stop light for the side that was using the turn signal in order to use this older 3 wire switch in my 6 wire car.....I probably should have gotten a six wire switch, but I was taking electrical engineering classes in college at the time and wanted to play with it.....It works, and is still in my Hornet after almost 30 years, LOL. PS: I also engineered a 4 way emergency flasher into the relay setup.

    The Dealer Installed unit that was in my '50 Pacemaker used a 6 wire unit. I have a new repro unit but I really want to use a different bulb in back.

    Does any one have wiring diagram that converts a 6/7 wire brake-light bypass type reproduction unit into a simpler system?

    I'll have to look at my Pacemaker again and I have some diagrams from the Pacemaker repair manual and from YnZ's which built the harness. I'm sure that the taillights have a separate bulb for the turn signals, while it uses the same lights for the front parking lights. My turn signal is the 3-wire style (Blue is left, yellow is right, and black is power). Pretty simple really.

    That is what I was hoping to get. I just can't figure out how to re-wire the thing to bypass the brake light switch.

    Do you have an electrical testing meter? If so, it is simple to work out which three wires are needed to work like Doc describes above. That's what I did (had to rewire the whole car) and works well. Put in a dash pilot light also. Happy to draw a plan an scan to you if it would be useful.

    OK. I have a test meter. I thought I would ask first before I went that route.

    I also put in the dash jewel light on the dash, and that works well and is quite easy to install. Turns out I had a small short which caused some funny business at first. That short was caused from the rectangular instrument cluster. The electrical power for the turn signal unit comes off the fuel instrument (I think that's the one). Do you still need the diagram? I'll have to scan and send it to you. Let me know. But again, the rectangular instrument panel in front of the driver is poorly designed and it is easy for it to short out if anything has been moved at all. The electrical contact posts for the instruments are very close to the metal housing. Just a little moving and they will cause a short. If you've taken this apart to clean the indicators, just be sure you put it back right (and tight) and possibly make some minor mods to keep shorting from happening.

    I'm using a six wire turn signal switch on my '51 Hornet which has blue, brown, green, orange, red and yellow wires. Mine did not have turn signals originally; but apparently, the signal light wires branched after the junction box in '51 unlike the later models which use separate wires for the left and right sides - one of which connected to the front parking lights, the other with the rear. The orange and green plastic covered wires on this switch go to the front, the brown and yellow to the rear. This setup uses a junction box that will allow the two wires for each side to be plugged in- in the case of mine on the top row.

    The red wire from the switch unit connects to the brakelights on the senior cars which used separate bulbs. The blue wire connects to the flasher. There are three wires entering the flasher: power (which I've connected to the on side of the ignition switch), the center which is connected to the blue wire from the TS switch, and the third which runs to the telltale light on the dash.

    If you use a separate brake light bulb it's no problem to hook-up using the later model junction box... WALT-LA
