The difference in gearing was at the transmission end of the speedometer cable, not in the speedometers themselves. any 1951-53 Stepdown speedometer (Jet was completely different) will work in your 1951, but you would need the correct speedometer drive gear that fits into the rear of the transmission. If your current speedometer cable and drive gear are OK, and correct for the car I have some speedometers from 51-53 laying around. You can swap the face on your current speedometer if the one I have is the 52 marbled pattern, for the correct black face, with gold center (1951 was gold, 52-53 were white centers).

Does your 51 have the old Hudson made welded cover/ removeable pumpkin 3.58:1 rear end? Or has it been changed to the later Spicer / Dana 3.07:1 ?

What Ken said is right. I am not sure I understand. Are you puting in a hdro instead of a standard trans?Maybe this will help. I have a 51 single Hy
dro with a 3.54 rear end. I put a 52 3.04 in t he car. I took the spedo. gear from the 52 dual range tranny and used it in my single range tranny and that corrected the speedometer. All the corrections are made by putting indifferent gears (number of teeth on the gear) to make the spedo read right.
