hudson jet clutch
-
in changing my engine on my 53 jet, the engine that was the replacement had a 3 speed tranny. I decided to replace 3 speed tranny with o.d. tranny. I have had some problems with clutch adj. complete release after driving for a distant. In looking through parts book I find that the jet used to different 9" clutchs, one for 3 speed tranny and one for o.d. tranny. Both clutches being listed at 9", my question is what is the difference between the clutches. Bill

The correct clutch plate for overdrive has heavier centre springs than the standard. There is no difference in the pressure plate assembly. If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging.

Thanks for the information on the jet clutch. Since I do not have the over drive clutch will using the standard clutch cause a problem? What is the advantage of using the O. D. clutch? Bill

According to the 1953 Mechanical Procedure supplement, the only difference is in the centre hub springs, and the o/d plate is identified by a ring of white paint around the hub. I used a standard plate in mine for 20 years with no problems. As there is no difference in the diameter or cover pressure I cannot see any problems arising, unlike the earlier cars that if you used a 9" clutch instead of 10" with o/d the clutch would overheat. If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging.

HI Geoff, I thank you for the jet clutch information and will proceed from this information. Bill
