Interesting Dilema
-
In an effort to make some repairs to the frame of my '46 pickup I removed the rear end and rear springs. I have a problem on the driver's side where the u-shackle goes thru the frame. After many years of no lube the threaded portion of the frame is totally wallowed out to an oblong hole. Anyone ever repair a similar problem? Didn't know if I welded in a tube of the proper inside diameter if the u-shakle sleeve would self tap on installation of if I have to attempt to cut some type of thread in there. Any help would be appreciated.

That should work fine. After all there is no thread as such in the spring eye or the chassis hole, the bushings self-thread into the holes. Another alternative would be to use a double-side shackle and pin using a bronze, rubber or nolathene bushing. If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging.
