Need a vacuum advance unit for a stepdown distributor
-
They can be reconditioned. Interesting how they pull them apart, replace the diaphram and reassemble them. Google will give you an address of who does it. Or if you are lucky you might find one of these NOS items thats 50 years old. Nothing wrong with a 50 or in my case a 60 year old. Previous threads have talked about using a Mopar distributor body with the Hudson distrib parts in it, in the stepdown motors. I wonder if this means points, caps, rota and vacuum advances are easier to find. Good luck, Barry

You can vary the vacuum movement start in point by shimming the spring. The "s of Hg of vacuum and degrees of advance is given in the 48-52 shop manual, and the 53-54 Shop manual supplement. I have played with the springs and shims to get a very close advance curve to that given in the manual. My test setup? A vacuum gauge, a tee fitting with one hose going to the advance, the other hose to my personal intake manifold.....suck on the thing till you get the "s of Hg called for in the manual, stick the tip of your tongue into the hose to hold that vacuum, and measure the degrees of advance. Add or subtract shim washers to the spring till you get it close enough. Very High Tech, no? LOL.
