Exhaust damper on 1947 Hudson 212

The coil spring keeps it closed, 3 to 6 o'clock, as it heats up it starts to go to 11,10 and 9 o'clock and points to5,4 and 3 when fully opened. You have to keep it lubed to work as it will freeze in the closed position and exhaust from 4-5 and 6 cylinders is held back, overheat, no power and gas will boil in the carb. Walt.

Walt the pointer on this one broke - it just swings free and points straight down. I have managed to get the shaft to move now after oiling and taping on it. But is quite tight still ,Witch way would I need to turn the shaft to leave it open when looking at the coil spring (passenger side) clockwise or counter clockwise?

It open counter clock wise. Just remove the top plate and you will see the whole thing. Butterfly shaft will not come out as it has a pin in the shaft underside of the manifold. Here in CA we take the whole thing out and carb runs cooler. Have to remove the manifold and tap and put in pipe plugs. Engine will run better. Walt.

Thank s Walt , That is where I have it now. And where it had been .I have been tinkering with this car for the last year. And never had any temperature issues till I took it for its first test drive. The gauge went off the scale hot side. The inside of the engine is clean , new head gasket did not help new 160 degree thermostat did not help. At one point Mice got in radiator but that has been all flushed out.
You can start it up and in 5 mniuettes its boiling the radiator water. I'm using a digital thermometer to watch what is happening . Water comes back from pump into side of block at 116-120 degrees when engine water is leaving at 200.
I cant figure what has happened ,

It sounds like the inside of the water jacket that is bolted to the block is rusted away. It should have a baffle with a small hole at the bottom and gets larger as it goes towards the rear. Better check this item. Walt.
