Honestly - Of all the discussions that have gone-on over the years, I don't recall having ever heard of anyone keeping the Hudson trans, putting-in a non-Hudson engine.

If you are set on putting-in a V8, I suggest you select a transmission that that will work easily with and mount seamlessly to the engine (i.e., something you won't need alteration of the engine, transmission, or some special mounting plates...) - be it automatic or a manual transmission. A bit more work (trans mounts & linkage, driveshaft, possibly rearend mods, etc..), but there will be work & mods - either way.

If you really want to keep the rest of the drivetrain - Consider using Hudson power. There is a lot you can do to a Hudson engine that will make it perform as good or better than it did new...

Just my $.02, for what it's worth...

    FYI
The Hudson Transmission would not hold up to even a modified Hornet Motor...The input shaft would twist then snap.... Way back in the day Racers were adapting Ford Trans & clutches to the Hornet Motor's...

The input shaft snapped on my Uncles stock 51 Hornet in 1956.

The single lever 48 transmission linkage would be a pain. I agree. Use a transmission that fits the engine. It's much easier to adapt a drive shaft and U-joint than a bell housing.

Why not put a hydro in with your slightly modified hudson motor. Change sterring tube, get hydro mount setup, and 51 or newer floor pan and go.
