1953 Nash Ambassador Serial Number Location
-
I hope someone can help with the following:
I am not able to match the serial number on the title for this car to any plate attached to the car body. I did find a totally different number on the firewall (see attached pictures). In the pictures, since the title of the plate says "Nash Serial", it would seem to me that this would be the actual serial number. Only problem though, this is not the number that is on the title. The Nash registration and title have carried this "other" number for many years.
I have tried to locate the engine serial number in hopes that this number will match the title. I have done a little cleaning on the engine block, but have yet to find a serial number here. I need to clean more of the grease and crud off the block to be sure.
I would also like to find the "hidden" serial number that must be stamped along the body somewhere. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

1953 serial numbers, according to the Standard Catalog of Independents, for the Nash Ambassador 6 started at R-692101, so the number on the plate is correct for 1953 and the plate is in the right place. There is no other location info given in the Standard Catalog and since my specialty, so to speak, is Hudsons (tho I drove Ramblers for years) I can't help you on other possible locations.
What number is on the title??? This could be a case of dual serial numbers with the one on the title being issued by what-ever state it was issued in because of a lost title somewhere along the line. I know a couple of cases of that being the case with Hudson's being rescued from a salvage yard in a title state and no title available. Washington state comes to mind, but I could be wrong on that assumption.
Engine numbers are located on the right side of the crankcase toward the front or front upper left side of the block in 1953.
Hope this is a help to you.

Thanks, Alex.
You certainly confirmed what I suspected. I looked at the engine block again and found the following number on the left side, in the middle, mid way down the block (under the carburetor: 313 6322. Don't really know if this is the engine number, or not. I was unable to scrape the crude from the lower, right front side of the block due to the exhaust pipe, oil filter, etc. being in the way. I will have to do that when I have more time. I also found the block casting number, so the above number (313 6322) is not the block casting number.
I have attached a picture of the Bill Of Sale. I bought the car several years ago from the son of the man who purchased it in 1954 (he had died a couple of years before). As you can see, the number A 216469 is on the Bill Of Sale in the block titled "Engine No.". This is the number that has been carried forward over the years as the serial number.
I am going to find time as soon as I can, and go over the engine block more thoroughly in order to see if the number on the Bill Of Sale matches anything. At any rate, I am concerned about getting the correct serial number on the title. For all the DMV will know, is that I could have stolen the car and used a different title to license it. This is why I really want to find the "hidden" serial number that is stamped somewhere on the car body.
Anyway, thank you for your response.

As I said, according to the Standard Catalog, engine numbers (same as serial number) located on the right side of the crankcase towards the front. To bad you don't have a Hudson - I'm the club "expert" on Hudson serial numbers. LOL
I really an baffled by the A number on the sales invoice. That eliminates the theory that you have a replacement title with a state issued serial number. I looked thru the Catalog on both sides of 1954 Nash and no serial numbers for the Ambassador start with the letter A. Other models start with a K (for Kenosha) or KC (El Segundo, CA plant). I guess about all you can do is find the engine serial number and tell your motor vehicle bureau it is what it is. Confuse the hell out of them. LOL
Good luck.

Thanks Alex,
I going to find the time and get the crud cleaned off the engine, so I can see what number that is. I really dread dealing with the California DMV. In recent years I have had to deal with them on a couple of lost titles, plus a couple of other things, and I have come to realize that they have evolved over the years into a bureaucratic mess of a monster. They really seem to go out of their way to make things difficult, if not impossible!
BTW, I do have a Hudson, as well as a Buick. With those cars however, I know exactly where the "hidden" serial numbers are located.
