66 Impala Not Driven for 2 Years-- what to do before I try to start it?

    Hello all,

Out of the blue, I've found myself with this Impala sedan. A friend was in a bind and was about to sell it to a salvage yard for $665. I thought what a shame, and decided to offer him the money and tow it home instead.

He had driven it regularly until, one day, he needed the battery for another car, removed it, and let the Impala sit in the driveway for 2 or 3 years. I've tinkered with an old Mustang before, but I'm a novice, and have no idea what to do (fluids, plugs, etc.) prior to attempting a start.

This is all I know about it:

    Tires are flat
    Needs a battery
Needs body work on one side, and rust areas taken care of
    Front bench should be reupholstered
Needs a re-key on one door

Second question: If it runs, is this worth restoring? Or is it worth more as parts?

    Thanks!
    Carrie

    Hello,
Well the first thing is to make a list of the basic like check and change the oil, see if the tires hold air, check the air cleaner, clean the battery cables, change the spark plugs, check the fuel line, check the brakes and the lines, then put the correct battery in and then try to turn it over, if the car has been sitting for 2 or 3 years when you try ot start it stay away from the exaust pipe cause squirrels may have stored nut in there, so good luck and get back to me and i would say that yes it will be worth restoring good luck and check the radiator for antifreeze and mastercylinder for brake fluid.

You are looking at a 1966 four door sedan with some rust issues. It has a very nice interior and if the engine checks out then what I would do is pull the stainless and put a MACCO paint job on it original color and replace the stainless. Then I would drive it as all original. As it is the value is about $1,500. Running with new paint and polished out you could expect to get around 6 or 7 thousand out if it. You would spend a lot of money before you could get the price much above that and a total number 1 condition car tops out just above 10K. 1966 was a good year and in my opinion its best value is as an original car...
