    An old Hudson dealer clock?

Don't know much about it - except it's probably from the 50's

i emailed the seller a day or two ago about the framed hudson piece, since they are in springfield, where i am. i was hopping maybe it came from one of the dealerships that used to be in town here and they had some info on it. i also wanted to pick up item if i won so nothing would get broke in shipping. i haven't heard back yet, some people are a little skiddish about letting you pick stuff up, they think they might get robbed or something. i noticed they were a new seller too, with zero feedback, so if they never answered back i might be a little aprehensive about putting in a bid- especially if they go high. who knows i will just have to wait and see how it goes.

That is not an official Hudson Clock. Looks to me like someone installed a vinyl decal in the center of a regular wall mount clock. Hudson Clocks were 20" in diameter, with a white Neon tube around the circumference with a lithographed glass face. The body of the clock was a dark blue hammer-tone finish. These regularly go for $1500.00 to $3000.00 on ebay.

Agree with Jerry above - this is just a regular old 40's era kitchen wall clock with the hudson logo glued on the face - what a sham - they ought to be ashamed and own up to what this really is!

That Was my first thought , somebody put a decal on a kitchen clock from the
50's.Even the color is wrong , all the Hudson advertizeing stuff I've seen was blue.

Still and all not a bad piece to hang on the wall - but at about half the starting bid price, if that. With the Hudson decals floating around these days probably could make your own "Hudson" clock for around less bucks, depending on the clock you'd have to buy.

I looked at the photos on eBay of the Hudson wall clock. It doesn't appear that someone recently placed a decal on the clock's face as the decal on it seems to have some age to it. Also, note that the decal is of a Hudson sign that would have been used along a highway to let motorists know that a Hudson dealer is up ahead in town (has anyone in the past reproduced this particular sign decal?). Just my observations.

    Dan,

If you look at the photo of the rear of the clock, you can see by the scale of the electrical plug coming out of the back that the clock can only be about 8 or 9 inches square at best. This is way too small for anything that might have been officially produced for Hudson. If someone out there likes it and wants to buy it, that's fine. I just didn't like the idea that the seller was sort of backhandedly purporting it to be an official Hudson item.

Kevin - well I ain't no "spring chicken" so to speak, LOL, but Bourbon, Indiana just such a small town (1 traffic light) that you had phone #s like that.
As a further observation, I just looked at it on eBay where I wish I could have zoomed in on it to REALLY look at the back, that as previously stated it's quite small & as you can tell it was made to be hung on the wall. Also they didn't use those white plugs then so whatever it is/was, that is a replacement if actually as old as is claimed.

The town in Maine I grew up in was so big we had two traffic lights and three digit phone numbers - ours, and I still remember it, was 355. Later they went to a two letter prefix - ours was YU for YUkon, but that number I don't remember. Later of course, the YU became two digits, 98, which is still in use today.

Dan - Where have you been for 30 years? The Club Store has had these decals in several different sizes for sale for at least that long!

    Jerry,

I've actually purchased a few of those Hudson "sales sevice" decals or stickers from the club store (at least in the last five years). However, I don't recall seeing the one with the "framework" around the sign like this one on the eBay clock for sale. Perhaps this was being sold 30 years ago when I was just getting started in the club. Anyway, as pointed out, the plug in the back does indeed show the clock to be smaller than might otherwise be thought. Someone should e-mail the seller and ask for the dimensions.

Items like these were sold to be displayed in either the garage area of the dealership, which is where my clock hung, or in the showroom.
The original clocks have a circular neon tube around the inside so it can be seen at night & it is wired such that the clock won't run unless that neon bulb lit.
The "THIS TIME IT'S HUDSON" neon sign I had & recently sold was made to hang on the inside window of the showroom as had metal rods facing forward with rubber tips to rest on the glass. My point being, what would a dealership have done with a dinky clock like that, assuming it IS an original Hudson factory item????????

The seller of this Hudson clock on eBay responded to my question, "How big is it?", telling me it's 7" x 7". That is a bit on the small side. Anyway, hope this helps you potential bidders.

RIGHT, I totally forgot about the kitchen! It was right behind the parts dept. & downwind from the body shop. We liked to hang there & get high from the smell of the lacquer thinner! We warmed things up on a bunsen burner & every other day the local iceman (yes, we had one of those in dear old Bourbon when I was a kid) would bring in a big block of ice to keep the beer cold (of course being underage I had to be sneaky, pour the beer into a Coke bottle).
Yep, I remember having one of those tidy little clocks in there, only problem was we couldn't plug it in as no electricity in kitchen thus went unused so it could end up on eBay half a century later.

they said it was made of wood, but it sure looks pretty good to be that old. i sure wish i could run over and look at them since they are in town. oh well, i still might put in a bid on the framed piece. this piece looks a little small to be a dealer item as well. maybe it hung on the kitchen door where the clock and the beer was kept.
