47 Hudson Generator needed

It appears as though I need a new or rebuilt generator after running all possible tests and replacing voltage meter. Original part is auto-lite gec-4801a, but can't seem to find that anywhere. Does anyone know where I can find a comparable 6 volt generator? How many amps should I be looking for?

I recall there was previous post that talked about a alternator that looked like a generator. But I haven't found it yet. Maybe someone else can come up with the information.

    Have a good day.

Thanks I think I will switch to the altenator, and I also wanted to thank you for sending me to Walt for the Crab rebuild. He did an excellent job, truck is running really good now. Actually drove it a couple miles yesterday for the first time. one question though. should a generator continue to keep the engine running such as an altenator does once the battery is disconnected? The gen. I have seems to be charging a little but when I disconnect the battery cable the truck shuts off. Shouldn't the truck continue to run if the gen. was working properly?

You are welcome. Glade to be of help. It is good to hear that your truck is running fine now. Actually, the generator at idle is not spinning fast enough to make current to charge the battery. You will notice the gen light is on at idle and when the engine speeds up the light goes out and is now generating current. At idle the battery, not the generator, is keeping all the circuits working and the battery is slowly dischargeing until the generator takes over as the speed increases. The alternator on the other hand is creating current all the time. One exception, the one wire alternators. The engine needs to rev up to about 1500 RPMs to for the alternator to start chargeing, then it charges at any RPM. Not a problem, once you start driving the the truck the engine will easily rev past 1500 RPM as you accelerate or just rev up the motor for a second and it will be chargeing.

It's great you are cruising again.

Thanks a bunch, as you can see I am new to this. I ordered the 6 volt alternator. One more question. What can I do about the dash guages in this truck (The speedometer set and the set on the glove box) Do you know of anyone who sells these or restores these?
