Wiring harness connectors

    Anyone have an idea how to replace the 4 pin connectors for the overdrive relay and stepdown switch on my 52 Hornet. I've bought a replacement wiring harness from Rhode island wiring. They say to re use the existing connectors,...doesn't look like the plastic connectors come apart. I don't want to have to cut and solder the wires at the connector if I don't have to.

    I just looked at a relay connector and it is a 2 piece moulded part held together with a rivet and was the same as used on my old '50 C6. I think that I removed the rivet (very carefully) and replaced it with a 4-40 or 6-32 machine screw and nut. That was around 1980 so The memory is a bit hazy. Hope this helps.

    Best I remember, Bruce has it correct..Also if the O.D.connecter is weathered, the connecter the turn signal flasher plugs into is the same, so not hard to find a good one of those in a parts car, as it is ptotected under the dash..

    I'd recommend Bruce's approach, just drill out the rivet, take it apart, clean the corrosion off the metal and re-bend the prongs to make the connection tight, maybe put some electrical grease on it to prevent further corrosion, then screw together (or maybe you can find the correct rivet and tool, and do it the old fashioned way.

    An alternative would be to take a really good photo of the connector, note the dimensions and any other characteristics of the connector, and shoot an e-mail to some old-line suppliers, such as Northwestern Auto Supply (which no doubt has a box of these someone up in their attic with 2 inches of dust on it): http://www.northwesternautosupply.com/getParts.html .
