Can't get new /nos rear brake drums for 1949-1951 mercurys.
I was wondering if anyone had done their homework and dimensioned the drum for a modern match ie ford pickup truck
drums? some machining if required would work too.
Any ideas. Kanter sells every thing except drums for these cars.

All you need to do is take the shoes with you to the parts store and match them up,most parts stores should have a book that has the pictures with the sizes of all the brake shoes that are made. I dont know if 51 merc brakes are bigger then the 51 fords but the 49 to 51 ford rear brakes are the same as the 60s falcon and possibly mavericks also

I got those drums from Napa and the front drum Part#6401070 does not fit the hub is to large. It should be the same size as the rear.Napa could not match up the front for me.What you could do is use rear drums on the front, but you would have to settle for 1 3/4 " shoes instead of 2 " Also the 3 small mounting holes do not line up very well but you could inlarge them with a rat tail file. It took me about 4 trips to Napa to get this ironed out.

    Thanks for the info !

You say the hub is too large for the drum? By how much? The drum could be machined to fit if everything elso matches! haven't been to NAPA yet but will go soon !

    thks

I bought 2 rear drums from Napa. Without having the number (from the above post)

they would not have been able to get the drums. There was no cross link. The number

doesn't even come up 49-51 Mercury on their system.

The drums were made in Canada (on the casting). The only item I could see out of place (I had an original drum to compare) was the 3 locking bolt holes did not line up, The holes are on a radius about 3/16" larger than they should be. Can be easily fixed with a drill. I want to look into the finding out who manufactures these drums so they can change their drawings..to get it right.

I still have to put them on the car. I will keep this updated as to the results.

    I'm Back !

The rear drums went on great no problem. Lots of meat on the surface for future drum turning as well.(better than stock) I left the three holes as they were. I'll match them up later. One mistake I made was to knock out the slot on the drum for brake adjustment. Don't do that as it is not needed. The backing plate already has a slot. ooops. I just put a rubber plug in "new" slot. I got pictures of the assembly. I reused the original brake springs etc as the y were in good condition, just painted them. I'll post pics later if it can be done on this forum.
