39 Lafayette Distributor / Oil Pump Drive

    Hi All

I need a little help with my 39 Lafayette. I had the engine rebuilt 12 years ago and it has sat on the workshop floor since!! I’ve rebuilt the water pump, overhauled all the other ancillaries and fitted them in the last few months and all I need to do now basically is refit it and the car is a runner but I have a small problem. I have still to put the head on but need to drop in the shaft that drives the distributor and oil pump first. Problem is I have no idea where it is. I have a feeling it never came back from the engine shop. I have however, managed to acquire what I thought was the correct shaft (brand new) but after trying it perhaps it’s not the right one. It not long enough or alternatively it has another shaft that fits between the distributor and gear drive. I had it all out 26 years ago when I got the car but it’s so long since I've worked on it I just can't remember what it should be like. The other problem is the new shaft is quite a sloppy fit in the bearing. So it’s the wrong one or the bearing is worn or a combination of a number of things.

Can anyone help with a picture or illustration of the shaft please?

Just to clarify it’s a side valve engine. Attached are some pics of the new shaft. Part number from the packaging 3102934

    Thanks

    Chris
