Turning the crankshaft
-
What tool is normally used to turn the crankshaft without taking the radiator off? I purchased a socket, but it is so deep that I can't get a rachet on the crank nut without hitting the radiator. I keep thinking that I'm missing something.
-
Buy a 1 and 1/2 box wrench, then heat just below the socket and bend the handle out, now heat 1 inch from the straight part and bend down. The reason for the first bend the the second bend is to clear the double pulley. All you have to do to use the wrench is remove the splash pan under the pulley and turn the engine, Note, never turn the engine in reverse for if you loosen the bolt you can damage the pulley as it may get loose on the shaft. Always turn clockwise. This way you will always have the cylinder at top dead center. Walt.

A shallow socket with the proper length extension to clear any pullies.

take off the flywheel cover & turn the engine by using big screwdriver on flywheel teeth.
I also have a huge 1 1/2" open/box end wrench which can be used from below if you jack the car up high enough or take off fan belt & water pump.
