Vin # question

Can someone tell me if the vin # on a 53 Hudson is stamped on the frame somewhere? I think the vin # tag is missing and years ago the car was titled with an assigned number and also a control number. If the engine is original to that car that would also be the correct vin #, is that correct? I'm looking at buying this car but don't want any headaches later on, and the car is far away so I have no way to look at it. Thanks in advance, Richie.

    Richie,

I'm not sure if the vin, as it were, number is stamped on the frame or anywhere else - someone else may know that.

If the engine is original to the car, yes, the engine number is the same as the vin (serial) number. However, the number stamped on the engine does not include the model number. The serial number tag does, ie 7B 1234567 (1952 Hornet).

Richie, the VIN is stamped about 3 places on stepdowns. First, they stamped it on the passenger side frame member about where the body and frame come together near the floor panel on the passenger side top of frame rail. next, go further down the same frame rail under the floor about where the seat panel is. Then, further back again, on the top of the frame rail . It's always on the top side of the passenger side (U.S. anyway) frame rail.

You said you "Believe" the tag is missing. If its there it would be on the passengers side where the door hinges are attatched to the body. A triangle shaped tag. If the number on your motor match's the title number you can just buy a new tag from the club store and stamp the right number on it.

Roger, the guy is old and not very handy from what I gather in talking with him. I told him where the tag was supposed to be and he said he couldn't find it and was going back to the storage garage tomorrow with a flashlite. The way the car is stored I don't think the door will open very far. I suggested that the tag might have been painted over as the car was painted 20 years ago. Thanks for your reply. Richie.
