I want to upgrade my 1966 mustang convertible
-
To Whom it May concern:
I want to buy a 1966 mustang convertible--have it all picked out--three areas of concern, of which I have already asked the dealer.
1. The clutch is very tight--he said it can be replaced with a FEATHERWEIGHT clutch kit and reduce 75% of the pressure--how effective is it?
2. I want to have a power steering kit installed--it is very difficult to steer--how effective is it?
3. I want to have power brakes installed--how effective are they?
The dealer will do all of the work for me--we will split the cost--he is not being unreasonable--I just want to know how effective and dependable these upgrades are--I really like the car--but I don't want to buy problems.
4. Also--to eliminate some of the fumes--he can run a vent tube from the motor--he also said there are additives for the gasoline--like the ones used in RV motorhomes--how effective are these?
Thank you for your help and consideration. I look forward to hearing back from you. -
To start with You are buying a 45/46 year old car, so be prepared for some problems, not saying You will have them but you need to be mindful.
#1) I have never heard of a feather weight clutch. If the clutch is too tight it may need the pivot ball Lubed or replaced, or if changing to a lighter pressure plate, make sure you change everthing. Clutch plate, Pressure plate and throwout bearing as well as the Pilot bushing. Too often the pilot bushing gets over looked.
#2) The power steering is a nice thing to have especially if you are going to use the car a lot....But before doing a swap, Have Your mechanic, check to see if the steering has been lubed.
You didn't say what engine is in the car, but a small block engine is not that heavy and should not be to hard to steer. The Mustang is not that heavy a car. and you should not have that much difficulty,
Provided You are not physically able to steer the car. But IT IS nice to have the Power even if you just WANT to have it. Just don't use a power box to cover some other problem with the steering.
#3 Power Brakes, Again Nice to have, but not really a necessity. The stock brakes, if properly adjusted work well. But, and this is just my opinion.....I would rather have the power.
#4 No opinion, never heard of the the gas additives, and it being a 66 it should not have any fumes coming into the car. I would look for another problem.
If I were You, I would have the car gone over by a mechanic that You trust. NOT THE DEALER..I'm not casting any aspersions on any one, but, some dealers have been known to cover up problems. Have it checked by someone NOT associated with the dealer.
All of these are my opinion, and like everything else it is subject to debate.
