Whatsit Fuel Pump

    OK, I'm confused. I have a few of these pumps but can't figger out what they go to.

    At first thought, they operate off the bottom of the cam on a 212 or early 254, but the mounting 'face' is bottom side up. The manual shows a similar arm on a double pump, but doesn't show the 'face'.

    The 212, and 39, and 40 254 I have in the garage has the wide part or 'cranium' of the 'face' up.

    The big 6s and stepdown 254 has the 'cranium' down, and use the same pumps.

    Anybody know the answer to this dilemma?

    Are there any numbers stamped on the pump along the edge of the mounting surface that can help identify the pump by cross reference or ???. If so post it here and I'm sure someone will be able to help.

    If all else fails, read the directions. My guy said there was a pic of it in the manual. Sure enough, Pg 57 shows the pump and the use of two gaskets and a steel spacer to make the transition from one 'face' to the other.

    I had never used one of these and somebody lost the spacer on this engine and without it it won't work.

    Problem solved as soon as I find or make a spacer.

    When you find the answer to this question, I would be very interested to know the result, as I have scratched my head till I'm nearly bald trying to work this out.

    I have one with the spacer though..It does show ther part number in the manual, but, I'm still in the dark with this pump.

    Yup, I have a 46 in the woods with a double pumper on it so must have the transition plate. I'll post a drawing of it on here. Nearly drove me nuts too. The plate is the answer in that it puts a 'neutral face' on it. This was Hudson's fix to using what was available. Quite ingenious, really.

    OK, I got the pump off the donor today and sure enough there was a spacer. I can't recall ever seeing one. So here's a pic of it, and a drawing if you want to make one. The book says it's .165 thick but this one was punched out at the factory and mics at .123. Good old flat cold rolled steel.

    Yep Uncle Josh, that is the same as the spacer I have here. Actually I bought it when I was in Pontiac at the national swap meet.
