37 floor pan-tray

Is the back half of the floor pan-tray really necessary on the PU's? The only thing I can see it does (besides holding dirt and water) is to hang the gas tank from---- I am considering cutting this one off behind the cab and eliminating that section, then mount the gas tank on the bed cross rails.
