53 hornet battery box
-
i have had a cold for the last couple of days but have managed to get a lot done anyway. i have the hudson up in the air, the front sheet metal off, the chevy 6 pulled out i had temporarily in there, and have started to scrape off 60 years of grease and tar off the front.
i thought i would just take off the battery box and took the 3 bolts loose, but noticed it is welded to the frame. is it suposed to be this way? is it missinng something on top? it is far too small for the 6 volt battery i have so i was just wondering if i should cut it off and grind down the welds. i kind of hate too if it is original. i guess a other option would be make a short box that mounts to the top of this. i will also include a picture of the grease i am scraping off just for kicks.100_2421.JPG800 x 600 - 48K100_2422.JPG800 x 600 - 62K -
What you have come across is the battery box platform. Upon this platform was a battery tray and on top of the battery was the battery hold down bracket. They appear to be long gone. As you mentioned, the battery box platform is still attached to the frame as it is welded into place. This part is origional,it's just minus a few parts. All stepdowns had their battery in this location with this setup.

i am going back to a 6 volt system. i have had a chevy 6 in mine for a year or so. not drove it over .25 mile from my house because the front end is pretty worn out, and i only have front brakes for the time being. now i am going back to a 308 and while the engine is out i am going redo what i need to on the front end.
