Turn signals randomly stoped working
-
Hello everyone this is my first thread.
So the other day I finally rebuilt my carb and took her out for a spin, got back and my alternator had fried, "smoke pouring out of it".
So then I rebuilt the alternator, put a new Echlin Voltage Regulator in for it, last night I checked all my electrical since I have been having issues getting the dash lights to come on. Turn signals worked great, headlights, high beams, brake lights, everything worked great.
Then this morning was test drive, started her up and immediately checked lights like I always do and noticed my turn signals no longer work, or click, and also that when I press the brake the front and back turn signal lights turn on "not flash" along with the turn signal indicator lights in the dash "not flash" just stay on when the brake is pressed.
I checked the grounds, took each one off and cleaned and put back on, I even ran jumpers form the ground on the bat to the car in several places ground is good. I even replaced the flasher to no avail.
Any help I don't want to drive it in case I have a problem where I could fry the alternator again.
Thanks! -
I sounds like you may have shorted some wires having to do with the turn signal switch itself after the alternator incident. Check the wiring around the switch, through the column and at the bulk head connector.
Electrical issues can be unforgiving but don't let it beat you.

I agree that this sounds like a short or wiring problem somewhere but, to ask a dumb question and you've probably already checked this, but are you sure you've changed the right flasher? I had a '70 Cutlass years ago that the signal lights started just staying on, not flashing, so I changed the flasher and still had the same problem. I changed the flasher again since maybe I had gotten a bad one, still the same problem. So then I figured the switch was the problem and a neighbor and I tore into the steering column and ended up getting that messed up so bad that I had to take it to the dealer to get it straightened up. I told the service tech my initial problem and he reached up under the dash and changed a hidden flasher that didn't even show up in the book for the car. The one on the fuse panel, the one I had changed twice, controlled only the emergency flashers, not the signal lights. The right flasher cost me $2 and it cost me $66 to get my steering column fixed!!
Good luck. Electrical problems are a bear!! -
I would hope you got it fixed by now but if not, I would start at the turn signal switch.
Unplug it and hit the brakes and see if the lights come on. When you have a rear turn signal bulb that shares the the brake light it is the switch that cancels out the brake light for the flashing of a turn signal. So basically saying that your brake lights go through your turn signal switch.
