I recently bought a 56 Ford Customline 2-dr ht with the 272 cu in Y-block V8 and Fordomatic transmission. The car has back up lights that do not operate. Please advise as to where the back up light switch is located. I have been unable to find it. It may be missing.

Also, I wish to purchase a left (driver's) side, dual exhaust manifold, new or used.
I have been told that the 272 and 292 cu in exhaust manifolds are the same? Please contact me if you have a good usable manifold for sale. harperwa49@gmail.com

I am located 25 miles north of Saginaw, MI.

    Thank you,

I would say to check at the bottom of the shift column. It should be activated when the reverse linkage is engaged.

Thanks Bob. Yes, it seems like it would have to be located at the bottom of the shift column by the neutral safety switch, but mine is not there and I cannot see where its bracket would have mounted. I have search my 56 shop and Fordomatic manuals and I can not find the back-up light switch mentioned anywhere.

Possibilities could be: Lights operated through the neutral switch, an independent switch somewhere on the column maybe in the engine compartment that makes contact with the shift lever. Can you see what color wires go to the back up lights? Maybe you can trace the wire.

Thanks Ron. I will try to trace the wires from the back up lights. I have purchased a back-up light switch for a 56 ford so it should be a separate switch. I could not find mine located near the neutral safety switch or the shift linkage. This switch and its bracket may be missing from my car.

What I need, is for someone with a 56 Ford to take pictures of their switch in its mounted position.

The neutral safety switch is also the backup light switch. Jump over it to determine if the switch is bad or if it is a wiring issue. If you have to replace the switch try to locate one for a 57 as that one will let you start the car in both park and neutral. 56 starts in neutral only as I'm sure you have found out. As far as the left side exhaust manifold - if you find one make sure that it came off of a car and not a truck. I don't think the truck manifold will clear the steering column.

    Good luck - Tom.
