Car quits. Why?

I have a 79 z28 camaro with a 400 ci smallblock w/ headers, camelback heads, double valve springs, aluminum rocker bearings, high rise intake, and a speed demon carb. After driving for 15 minutes it starts acting like it's out of gas (sputtering, lost power when i hit the gas, and backfiring) and it quits but starts up fine 20 minutes later and it does it again. I added an electric fuel pump with the mechanical one and double checked my fuel lines but it did nothing. Fuel filter is always full. Any help? at all? I can't figure this out. There could be rust in the tank...but ive been driving it for a few months and it just started happening.

Strange... if it's a gas issue, you can run a trial with an additional gas tank but maybe it's an ignition issue ?

Could be the coil is getting hot. Doesn't sound like a fuel issue

it has electronic ignition but the gas tank idea sounds good. Maybe somebody dumped water in the tank? i keep the car outside because theres not enough space in the garage so it could be it right?

So, i just took off the mechanical fuel pump and replaced it with a cover plate and a new electric pump, then changed the fuel filter. I drove it for about 20 minutes and it started doing it again. I put it on the floor and it couldn't get over 3000 rpm's and 'popped' inside the engine. Feels like a valve is stuck closed?? I dont know.

From the way You have described the problem You have something getting hot and breaking down. Try another coil. If NOT the coil check the wire to the distributor. Something is getting hot and breaking down.

You may have tried this but if not, the next time it doees it, pull the gas cap off the tank and listen for a whoosh of air. The caps vent may be plugged making the pump pull a vaccumn and not getting gas. Just a thought....

This is clearly a potential cause !;) I got this on my wife's 4WD, I drilled a small hole in the cap and it was fine (make sure no water can enter the gas tank...)

Try this as this problem acts like you say your car does. Hook a vacuum gauge to the carb and start the engine, and slowly bring up the RPM's and watch the vacuum reading, and if it starts to fall and then drops to zero, you have a blocked exhaust, this was a problem on many GM cars. Walt.
