How can I locate a classic car with an old VIN?

I restored a 1966 Checker Marathon A-12 with my father when I was in high school. Unfortunately I had to sell it when I graduated college because I was low on money. I would love to track to vehicle down and repurchase it.

I still have the VIN number, but have lost the contact information of the guy who bought it off me. I can't use a site like carfax.com because the VIN numbers in 1966 are a different format than todays modern VIN numbers. Thus, carfax thinks the VIN doesn't exist and produces an error message.

Does anyone know how I can track down the car?

    Thanks,
    Matt

Here is a Checker website that seems to be associated with a Checker owner's club: http://www.checkertaxistand.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12&Itemid=95

Why not conteact them and ask if they maintain a roster of surviving Checkers, with the original serial numbers (which you have)? It's a long shot but you could try it. The website has a message board and you might try posting a message with your car's serial number listed, to see if by any chance one of the board's readers knows what became of the car.

If you sold this thing 30 years ago when it was just "an old car" it may have ended up in a junkyard. But if you sold it more recently, to an enthusiast (versus a traveling salesman who planned to drive it to death) there's a possibility that it has been passed from one set of loving hands to the next, and might still exist.

Yes the car was sold most recently. I sold it in 2006 to a guy who ran a movie prop company. He was contracted to rent the car to be used in the Film "American Gangster."

I haven't tried ye, but I suppose I could call the production company of the movie to see if they still have the records for what company they used.

I was hoping there would be a more direct route such as a carfax solution to go through, but I guess not.
