My 51 Chevy Straight 6 is overheating. I will rebuild it soon, but what is the correct running temperature?

Welcome to the site Sweet Pea

Running temps on a car like this if let's say it were new?

The T-Stat in these engines were stamped. There were three Stats.

A stamp with 151 on it would start opening between 148 and 156 and full open @ 176

A stamp with 143 on it would start opening between 140 and 147 and full open @ 170

A stamp with 181 on it would start opening between 175 and 184 and full open @ 204

Overheating can be caused by: low coolant, lose belt, bad water pump, timing is off, frozen manifold heat control valve or a clogged system.

If and when you do the engine, be sure you have the block hot tanked so all the crud is out of it.

Hope this helps and have fun.
