There has been much discussions about oil that we use in our Hudsons today and we all have our preference on brands but, my question is weight. In the 50s I used 10w in the winter and 20 in the summer. Today with these modern oils Im not sure. I have a 51 Hornet with 50000 original miles and another with probaly 200000 miles. I use 10w30 in the 50000 mile car and 15w40 Rotila in the high mileage cars.I have this for my diesel truck. None of these motors have been over hauled and my question is what weights or multi weight oils do you recommed. I dont drive them in the winter any more and rarly take them on more than 100 mile trips. None of the engines use any oil with leaks being the main loss of oil. I have reached the age (70) were things dont have to run perfect anymore but, I would like to preserve what I have.

Sounds like you're doing almost everything right, only thing is to add some kind of zinc additive to your 10-30 oil as they've removed the zinc from passenger car oils. The Rotella should still have enough zinc to protect the cam and lifters. As far as the multigrade oils, that's what almost everyone seems to be running in these cars. Myself if I had a good running car with lots of miles on it that leaked oil, I'd switch to a single grade detergent oil such as 30 weight. But that's just my opinion!

I use 15W-40 Rotella in my 52 Wasp and my 27 Ford and drive them year-round. Neither have been rebuilt. Both cars CONSUME 'store-brand' 20W-50, but usage with the Rotella is minimal. I wish I could say they don't leak; the Hudson only leaks a little, but the Ford keeps the driveway sealed.

Thanks fellows for the comments. Not being up to speed anymore, I dont know what the zinc does. They do make 10w30 Rotella but it may not be the same as 15w40. May try some in the low mileage 51. Thanks.

Don't fool around, use Castrol 10-40 and drive your car. GM cars are the ones that need ZINK, as they wear camshaft out, and this is a big problem with Chevy's. My Hudson engine, rebuilt in 1997, and now has 135,000 miles on it and no engine problems just using Castrol 10-40. Walt.
