Value of a 66 Chevelle
-
Hello all, I am new to the classic car world. I've always liked the 66/67 chevelle's and I have located a 66 and the guy is asking 14,900 obo. I need some input from some of y'all that have the experience and knowledge that I don't about whether or not this is a good buy or not! It has a 454 roller motor with cam, long tube headers, 800 carb, turbo350 tranny, 10 bolt rear end with 342 gears. Also has dual electric fans, pro comp guages, front disc brakes, MSD ignition and a line lock. I saw it this morning and gave it a once over to the best of my ability. Floor panels, rocker panels, frame and trunk all seemed to be free of rust or repair. It fired right up and drove like a champ, shifted smoothly, power steering. It's a 136 car which is fine with me. OK, now my concerns, Noticed some bondo on the driver side rear panel, headliner is faded, when we drove it the temp got to 190 rather quick, rear brakes need to be bled once more, not a posi trac. Gimmi some input or advice please.

Iam by far NO expert But The engine is a replacement as the 454 was not offered in 66, and the 10 bolt rear suggests to me that the car may have been a small block at one time. I believe the 396 was the largest engine offered in the chevell in 66, and it would have had a 12 bolt rearend. Headliner is not a problem, But you need to check out the extent of the bondo repairs. As for the temp, If it doesn't go above 190 I would not be very concerned but if it does go above I would be looking for a heavier duty as it may still have a small block radiator in it. If you don't mind the things I stated it, does not sound UNREASONABLE.
Ps. It seems that a big block would have had a turbo-400 trans.
Like I said, I'm no expert and these are just my opinion. For what it is worth.

I'm sire someone who knows more than I will chime in soon -
Hey Bob thank you for the input, I sure hope some more people chime in. The turbo 350 and 10 bolt threw me off as well. And you are correct about the 396 being the biggest motor offered in 66 as well as it would have come with a 12 bolt. I;m somewhat savy with that stuff. Thanks for the temp advice, as I wasn't sure what the normal operating temp is for the big blocks. The radiator is a pretty decent size aluminum one with the dual electrics. When I go back and see it again I will drive it for a bit longer, we only took about a 5 minute ride this time. Now the bondo work is where I am NOT savy. The only bondo I could locate was in the driver side rear 1/4 panel and some in the rocker panels and a bit in the section of metal between the back edge of the trunk and the rear windshield. See, I don't know how much bondo is too much or what qualifies it as not worth it.

I'm No body man either but I know that the less bondo the better. I seem to remember being told once that if you had to add more than a quarter inch you needed to do more body work. All 66&67 Chevells rust around the rear window so that is not that rare. The main thing is how well it was repaired. Ideally a skim coat of bondo is all you want, but I have seen a lot of old cars with quite a bit in them. Like I said some one will surely get on here that knows more than I do.
AS Before
Good luck

Being a vehicle with a swapped engine is not so much a bad thing as it is an originality blemish. If you're looking for a stock vehicle, you might be disappointed with this one. But really, in all actuality, the engine in this thing is killer.http://www.licauto.com/used-cars.aspx
