Advice on a delima that I have
-
Ok, here's the project. 1954 Mercury Custom Sedan, Dad bought the car in '72, Mom blew the 239 in the late 70's, refitted with a 256 bored .030 over then it was parked for 20 years...I got the car in 2001 replaced all of the essentials, everything worked fine for the next couple of years then the exhaust valves got stuck and I didn't have the money, time, or the confidence to fix it.
Present day, I decided to fix the engine and hopefully make the car show this weekend. No luck, valves stuck and engine siezed. Still going to the car show...on foot though!
Here is the delima...
1. I can rebuild the engine as is cost unknown as the block and head will have to be machined
2. I can get a 292 for about 2K
3. I can get a 239 for about $250.00 and restore to close to original
4. I could persue the option of upgrading it to a 302.
I still like the originality of the car with the 3 on the tree and all of the old bells and wistles. I do want to re-wire it since I have the engine out, so 12 Volt will for sure
Any help or advice would be appreciated -
292 will bolt in, 302 will almost bolt in, one of the easiest swaps I have ever done and you don't have to butcher the car. I put a 79 302 in my 57 Ford sedan delivery in 1982 using almost all stock Ford parts, that took several hundred pounds off the front end and gave me super reliable transportation for many years, plus on the hiway it got 22 or 23 mpg @ 65 to 70 mph! That was with a 3.00 rear end with G-78X15 tires. If you want to know more my email is steveengel65@yahoo.com

Ok, more info...got the engine moving, valves are looking ok, most of the rust was on the surface, hoping it just needs a good honing and bath. I'll post pictures once I get the heads back and the block machined. Shouldn't be that spendy to get it running again
