Back fire through carb?

HELP! I can't figure it out. I removed the head and set the timming as per the manual, I think. When the intake valve came up and went back down and the piston rose to the top I set the dist back in with the rotor facing the number 1 on the dist cap. I checked the gap in the points, .020. The 1-6 mark on the flywheel is 1/2 ahead of the pointer on the inspection hole. She fired up and BANG! big back fire through the carb. She will run for a minute but not idle and if I step on the gas BANG! Any thoughts? Thanks.

May be a little too far advanced, try playing with the dist while you've got it running. If you can get it to idle then set the timing with a light.

I had the same issue with a 49 i was working on. Found out i thought i was hitting on cyl 1 and i wasnt. just a quick test pull all the plugs lay a piece of paper over the #1 cyl then turn the engine over by hand wait until you see the paper move then you know your on 1. Adjust your rotor to point to #1 wire and follow the correct firing order.

    that worked for me.
    good luck.

Make sure you have the correct firing order, 1-5-3-6-2-4. Walt.
