splasher main bearing packing material

Making sure I do this right the first time. When I disassembled the 37 Terraplane six -- http://s294.photobucket.com/albums/mm97/studebaker2/37 Terraplane engine/
I noticed that the main bearing packing holes were filled with RTV instead of rope packing. Is this the accepted method of doing this now? Doesn't oil need to drip down or "wick" through the packing?
