1946Hudson truck oil leak(262 engine)

Fellows (and Ladies) I need help. I've just put a new y N z harness in Jethroe (the Pickup Truck), and discovered the rear main seal is gushing oil. I've had an original rope seal and a new neoprene seal installed by a profesional old time mechanic. The new (neoprene)seal didn't seem to leak when first installed. The Hudson Manual says I should have .006/.012 forward and aft play in the crankshaft. I have .020/.025 play. Could this be the cause of my problem? Any suggestions on possible solutions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Fred

Was there any rust spots where the seal rides? If not, then the seal was not put in correctly or the packing in the 2 side holes was not put in tight enough. They have to be really packed tight. Walt.

I also use a dab of Black RTV at the parting edges of cap.. Increased movement indicates little wear on thrust bearing sides but personally dont think the problem. However, If Mains are 'badly worn' oil pressure would be low, and could cause rear main to leak prematurely.
